| A BRIEF HISTORY OF THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE | ||||
| Therapeutic massage was first recognised by the ancient
Chinese in 2,700 BC. Gradually the concept of healing by touch and
manipulation was born. History tells of its use throughout the ancient
Greek and Roman world.
During the 18th century Peter Henry Ling of Sweden made a very dramatic contribution to the understanding of therapeutic massage. He realised that it was very important to have an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology before applying massage. He was the founder of the Swedish system used today. By the nineteenth century massage was accepted as a reputable means of treatment. Gradually standards, examinations and accreditation's were set. This led to a safer, professional and more holistic approach to the treatment of minor aliments. It is this approach that has filtered through to the treatment of animals today. Flight Equine Therapy offers this approach, combining extensive training with full veterinary consent and insurance.
