The muscle groups of the equine body are designed to work in harmony with each other to facilitate movement; if one or more of these muscles cannot work to its full potential due to injury, tension, fatigue, pain etc. the whole horse may be affected. This scenario can result in:
A decrease in performance
Lameness
Loss of muscle tone
A change in attitude or character
Resistance
A change in gait or way of going
These are problems that mean the horse is sending you alarm bells. No two horses will react to pain in the same way. Some may show no symptoms at all except those that are obvious to the sports massage therapist on palpation. This does not necessarily mean there is no problem, an equine sports massage could help unlock your horses full potential!
It is recognised that sports massage can also:
Enhance performance
Prevent injury
Aid early detection of muscular problems
Increase range of movement
Relax the uptight, nervous or excitable horse
Assist the body's natural ability to heal
Assist with improving tone and elasticity of muscle fibres
Aid blood and lymph flow
Relieve muscular spasms and adhesions
